Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a severe, chronic functional digestive system disorder. It is estimated that it affects 25 to 45,000,000 people in the USA and as much as 11% of the world’s population. It is categorized by bloating, cramping, distention, sharp pain, burning, diarrhea, constipation and mucous in the stool. Many studies on the use of probiotics in treating IBS have shown mixed results making their use controversial. Various foods and supplements have been suggested to treat and minimize its symptoms.
