FTN Episode 285 – Is Netlisting in Warhammer 40k OK?
Army building is a personal journey sometimes. Sometimes you can save a lot of time borrowing list ideas from other people. We often think of netlisting as just taking point for point in a tournament winner’s list but it’s also just fine to get ideas from other people.
Hey hey,
So sorry that we missed last week. I hope that things calm down schedule wise for everyone soon so we can get back to the normal rotation. I missed it! Josh Ginn fills in this week. He’s a panelist from a LONG time ago and now he’s back. Glad he could pinch in this week.
Netlisting is fine. There is no reason not to do it. It happens in almost every competitive environment. If you can’t get out in front of the curve you should at least embrace it if you plan to do well in competitive events.
I don’t see anything wrong borrowing the ideas of others. It even feels good to see your ideas used by other people in games like this. There is a ‘stigma’ to but that stigma basically comes from haters who want to disparage the netlister because they didn’t come up with the idea themselves. So what?
Borrowing ideas like this is a time saver. I am definitely not suggesting that borrowing ‘intellectual property’ is a good idea. That’s theft and wrong. But there is no ‘ownership’ of a good list idea. If you think it’s something that’s right for you then by all means build and play it. You’re the one who has to buy, build and paint the models.
It’s also fun to innovate. If you’re struggling to come up with something you like its very possible you need to use one of these other successful lists as a base then sub out some stuff you don’t like and then add in what you do. Careful with changing too much before you test it though..
The Wrong Way Kids will be putting on their first official public event later this year the Armageddon Series: Coastal Assault. Tickets are up for sale right now. Please join us. You will have a good time. It will be a full ITC format event and an excellent opportunity to get ITC overall and faction points.
