This morning we discuss the tragic and painful deaths of Nadav and Avihu, Aharon's two sons, in our Torah portion, Shmini. I have nightmares about this passage, and I have no way to understand it. But we focus on Aharon's response, silence. Bailey Newman leads us to understand that response, and how we can, when tragically necessary, incorporate it into our words and feelings. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
