The AWAARE (Autism Wandering Awareness Alerts Response Education) Collaboration works to prevent wandering incidents and death within the autism community. In 2008, Danish researchers found that the mortality rate among the autism population is twice as high as the general population. In 2001, a California research team attributed elevated death rates in large part to drowning. Drowning, prolonged exposure, and other wandering-related factors remain among the top causes of death within the autism population. Lori and Wendy share how AWAARE provides information and tools in an effort to help stop these preventable tragedies. Please see www.awaare.org. Wendy and Lori will also discuss the upcoming National Autism Conference in Tampa, Florida, November 11-14. What information will this year's wonderful speakers have in store for you so that you can help your child? Please visit www.nationalautismconference.org.
