“Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." John 20:21
One of the greatest, perhaps the greatest gift we receive is the gift of peace. Jesus describes it as a peace that the world cannot take away from us.
It’s easy to talk about peace when things are going well. How does it work when we face adversity? How does it work when the outcome is uncertain or is certain to be bad?
Not sure I can tell you how it works, but I can give you an example of what it looks like. Twenty years ago this summer my father passed away from terminal lung cancer. Eighteen months before that he been given nine months to live.
My father hoped for good health and long life. My father hoped for a miraculous recovery. These he didn’t receive.
But I saw the peace that he had knowing that regardless of the outcome God holds the future. All would be well. He continued to visit and care for the sick until he physically couldn’t.
He received God’s peace and went into the world to love.
Peace be with you.
