Never give up!
“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as if you couldn’t hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time when the tide’ll turn.” –Harriet Beecher Stowe
Living and working in a society where she herself as a woman did not have full legal rights, Harriet Beecher Stowe, went on to become one of the most influential and impactful abolitionists of her time. Her depiction of slavery- heavily criticized both then and now- opened many eyes to the evils of slavery.
We will likely never know all the opposition that she faced, in finding her voice and then in finding a vehicle for that voice to reach the world. But we do know one in thing, in the face of challenges and obstacles, setbacks and disappointments, criticism and rebuke- she never gave up.
I’m reminded of the words attributed to Paul in the letter to the Ephesians: “After you’ve done everything to stand, keep on standing.”
I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
