New laws could see TikTok banned from the US due to concerns that it provides a way for Chinese authorities to spy on Americans. But is this just political posturing, or should you actually be worried? Thankfully, at the moment it’s not something to lose sleep over – unless you are responsible for security at a water, electricity, or other critical infrastructure operator. Those are the sectors being targeted by Chinese government-backed hacking group Volt Typhoon, according to a recent alert from the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the National Security Agency, and the FBI. Hackers have apparently been breaking into the networks of critical infrastructure companies, then using “living off the land” techniques to hide their presence. Authorities worry the hackers’ are establishing footholds that would let them turn off electricity, water, transportation, and other services from the inside if China and the United States ever got into a conflict.
