048 - Surah Al-Fath "The Victory" the 48th chapter of the Qur’an | Recitation
Surah Al-Fath (Arabic text: الفتح) is the 48th chapter of the Qur’an. The surah titled in English means “The Victory” and it consists of 29 verses.
This surah is a Medinan surah and was revealed around the time the Prophet (ﷺ) was returning to Medinah from Hudaybiyyah, a place right outside Mecca. Here Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) negotiated a pivotal peace treaty agreement with the Quraysh called the treaty of Hudaybiyyah. This helped relieve tensions between the two cities and affirmed peace for ten years.
Some of the companions thought accepting this treaty was a defeat but the first verse of this surah that was revealed shortly thereafter states, “Verily we have granted thee a manifest victory” (Quran 48:1).
They were denied pilgrimage that year, but the treaty allowed for them to return every year thereafter for the next 10 years without any hostility. The treaty also allowed Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to form partnerships or allies with any other tribe, the Quraysh were given the same rights. This gave the Muslims equal footing as the Quraysh and the freedom to form new alliances without scrutiny or rising tensions.
