Antibiotics have been used since their discovery in the 1920s to treat infections.
Now, there is concern that the use of antibiotics is making it harder to treat infections, as the bacteria may develop resistance over time.
Overuse and misuse are likely culprits in this resistance. Viral infections aren't helped by antibiotics, but many doctors prescribe them anyway.
Antibiotics are also used on animals in our food supply. That may contribute to antibiotic resistance as well.
