The Case for Genocide Against Armenians in Armenia
Last month, lawyers for the California-based Center for Truth and Justice, or CFTJ, opened a formal investigation into Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and other top leaders for genocide. The Center has submitted an Article 15 communication to the International Criminal Court, urging the court’s chief prosecutor Karim Khan to look into alleged atrocities committed by Azerbaijan’s forces against Armenian populations. In an opinion article in Politico, Luis Moreno Ocampo, the first Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, has said “it’s a petition the ICC should consider." He continues: "That’s why the massive dossier presented to the ICC on Apr. 18 by U.S. Orange County Superior Court Judge Gassia Apkarian, who represents the Center for Truth and Justice, is remarkable. It presents the consistent declarations made by Aliyev over the last decade, unequivocally demonstrating his intention to destroy ethnic Armenians."
To discuss the details of this petition that was submitted to the ICC is Arsineh Arakel. Arsineh Arakel is a founding member of and on the board of directors for the Center for Truth and Justice, established November 2020. She trained CFTJ’s law clinic students in Armenia in 2021, mentoring as a supervising attorney on the ground conducting interviews of repatriated POWs and family members of POWs. She is an attorney practicing Worker’s Compensation defense in southern California.
