The Mitzvah of counting the Omer, which is commanded in our Parsha, Emor, has, like the three Festivals, an agricultural layer and a historical layer. This morning we discuss the agricultural layer of counting the Omer, and provide the answer of the Rav, Rabbi Yosef Soloveitchik to why we do not make the Brachah of Shehechiyanu the first night we count. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
