Shakeel Badayuni was born in Badaun in 1916 and received higher education at the Aligarh Muslim University. He became interested in poetry and wanted to be a romantic poet, which was unusual because, at that time, the progressive writer’s movement was at its peak. But Shakeel decided to be an interpreter of his heart. After working in Delhi for a few years, he moved to Bombay in 1944. His association with music director Naushad gave us unforgettable lyrics from films like Baiju Bawra, Mother India, Mughl-e Azam, Chaudvin Ka Chand, and many others. Begum Akhtar sang some of his compositions; these ghazals sung in her melodious voice are considered classics in the ghazal singing genre. He won the Filmfare award for the best lyricist in 1961. Shakeel died at a relatively young age of 53. In one of his popular lyrics, he said farewell in an emotionally vibrant language.
