- Happy 100th birthday, WNYC. The New York radio station went on air from the Municipal Building, above, on Jul 8 1924 at 8.54pm. There will be a re-enactment of that first broadcast at 8.54pm tonight, and the Empire State Building will be bathed in WNYC red this evening. There is special programming throughout the month, and the station is looking for New York stories. It produces a number of popular podcasts including On The Media and Radiolab.
- Podtrac released its ranker for June 2024. Each top 5 is unchanged, though almost everyone saw a drop in consumption. The New York Times is no longer listed as a US publisher, though The Daily remains the most listened-to podcast. The ranker measures participating publishers only.
- Traditional ad agencies are “creating wastage for advertisers and jarring ads for audiences“, says a new podcast advertising agency. EarMax Media launched last week in Sydney NSW, Australia.

The Tech Stuff

- This email should now be in dark mode, on iOS at least, if you’re using dark mode on your device. No more seared retinas. Please let us know if bits look weird.
- Could your podcast grow faster if it’s dubbed into different languages? We played with Wondercraft AI all this week. Wondercraft AI has a feature called “dubs” - you upload your audio of you reading something and it will dub it into another language - using your voice. Here is our daily podcast in French, in Japanese, in Danish, in Dutch, and in Arabic (including a clip of a guest, too). If you speak any of those languages, we’d be curious to hear your comments.
Moves and Hires
- Clair Weaver has been appointed Head of Factual for LiSTNR.
- Not a hire, but definitely a move: the School of Podcasting’s Dave Jackson managed to do himself quite the injury, while walking fast and fiddling with his phone at the same time. Here’s the blog post about it but it’s not for the squeamish. His phone is fine, though, thanks for asking. Heal quick, Dave!
