"Help! I'm Struggling with Scrupulosity!" (The Patrick Madrid Show)
Do you or someone you know struggle with excessive guilt or constant fear that you're offending God? It could be a condition called scrupulosity, and it's truly a difficult cross. There is always hope, however, and you are never alone.
Patrick Madrid had a heartfelt conversation with Laura from Hammond, Indiana, who’s been grappling with scrupulosity. 🤍
The Struggle is Real
Laura opened up about her intense fears of despair and feeling hopeless, especially worrying about whether her confessions are valid. She’s been diagnosed with scrupulosity, something that can make daily spiritual practices feel like a battlefield.
Confessions and Communion Woes
Laura shared her anxiety about forgetting sins during confession, fearing it invalidates her reception of Holy Communion. Patrick reassured her, explaining that forgetting past confessions, especially from years ago, isn’t sinful.
He emphasized that for a sin to occur, one must knowingly and willingly commit it, which clearly isn’t the case with Laura’s worries. He even used a light-hearted example, asking Laura if she remembered what she had for dinner a couple weeks ago – a memory most of us wouldn’t recall! 🍽️
God’s Unfailing Love ❤️
Patrick reminded Laura that Jesus’s love is unwavering. He quoted Jesus, saying, "Come to me all you who are heavily burdened and I will give you rest," urging Laura to find peace in Christ’s promise. Her anxieties and blasphemous thoughts aren’t sins but temptations that the devil uses to cause doubt.
Spiritual Tips and Encouragement ✝️
Patrick suggested practical steps for Laura:
Look at a Crucifix: Keep one handy as a visual reminder of Jesus’s immense love.
Daily Affirmations: Recite, “Jesus, I love you. Jesus, I trust in you,” especially when feeling overwhelmed.
Spiritual Direction: Seek guidance from a good priest to navigate these spiritual struggles.
Book Recommendations 📚
To aid her journey, Patrick recommended two books:
Scruples and Sainthood by Terry Beattie
A Thousand Frightening Fantasies by William Van Ornum, PH. D.
Remember, God’s love is more powerful than any sin or doubt. Keep praying, trusting, and reaching out for support when needed. 🙏
Remember – you are loved beyond measure! 💖
