For some in this story the blind man was an object of theological debate, but for Jesus this blind man was an object of divine mercy. Following his healing, the formerly blind man believes in Jesus and is bold in proclaiming his faith even to the point of a hostile confrontation with the Jewish leaders. When the light shines some are made to see, but others refuse to believe and actually are blinded by the light that could have saved them.
