No really, we are all children of God
One of my conversation partners and beloved sisters in Christ disagrees with my view that we are all children of God. She points to the children of light/ children of darkness dichotomy that is found in the scriptures.
I believe the phase children of darkness versus children of light describes a person’s circumstance not their identity.
As in this passage from Matthew 4:16 “ the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
The Biblical metaphor for light and darkness describes the state or consciousness in which we live. Child of God is a metaphor describing our true identity.
Jesus gives us his metaphor for God and humanity in the story of the Prodigal Son. We as children may take our selves to places where we are unable to experience the father’s love. But the father never stops loving us, never disowns us, and is always ready to welcome his wayward child home.
No matter what, we never stop being God’s child no matter how long or deep the estrangement is. God’s mercy is everlasting. We can always come home.
