In this segment, Joel Wainwright, co-author of ‘Climate Leviathan: A Political Theory of Our Planetary Future,’ discusses a topic often overlooked in the broader discussion about global climate change and our planetary future: how our political and economic institutions will respond to global climate change. Joel outlines his view of what he and co-author Geoff Mann have dubbed “Climate X,” a political framework that consists of coalition of grassroots movements spanning the globe that are attempting to mitigate and adequately respond to global climate change as it unfolds, and how this political framework currently stands up against the dominant economic and political frameworks responding to climate change today.
Joel Wainwright is a professor at Ohio State University, where he teaches in the department of geography. He is the author of three books: ‘Decolonizing Development: Colonial Power and the Maya’ (which won the Blaut award), ‘Geopiracy: Oaxaca, Militant Empiricism, and Geographical Thought,’ and, most recently, ‘Climate Leviathan: A Political Theory of our Planetary Future,’ co-authored with Geoff Mann.
