** CASE STUDY **
Lois (59) and Clark (62) Kent live in Parramatta, NSW. They have a $550,000 mortgage and 2 kids (17 and 24).
Lois a journalist earning $110,000 + Super and Clark runs a private security business, Super Protection Ptd Ltd, estimated to be worth $5 million (based on 2x sales or 10x profit).
The couple has approximately $1 million outside of Super (in a smattering of unlisted funds, LICs and a few ETFs and stocks), plus $210,000 for Lois and $240,000 for Clark in Super. Clark believes he is a high-risk investor, and currently manages a portfolio of funds and ETFs. Lois thinks she is more conservative-to-balanced but Clark convinced her to go high-risk inside Super and she's happy with the decision.
The only major goal they have is wanting to retire within 10 years, being self-funded and debt free. They're not too worried about leaving much to their children, but would like to give back regularly and support their children with their first home and/or weddings when the time comes (probably in the next 4 years). They'd also like to travel modestly every few years.
