#369: A Leader Is Only As Good As Their Ability To Handle Conflict & How To Deal With The Adult Toddler Tantrum
s this true? “A leader is only as good as their ability to handle conflict.”
One of my clients shared that w/me recently.
It body slammed me b/c I was an absolute train wreck at conflict yet considered myself a “good” leader (whatever that means).
The only mental/emotional file I had for “conflict” was negative.
I had never seen an example in my life of “good conflict” or conflict done well.
So not only was I terrible at conflict, I was terrified by conflict.
To the point of even becoming completely all-consumed by a particular conflict in my life for over 2 years. Not exaggerating. It was almost paralyzing.
I use a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) analogy in describing this vital topic of conflict that was very helpful for me.
EQ Exercise: Do a “conflict audit” in your own life:
1.) What emotions come up when you hear the word “conflict”?
2.) What beliefs do you have surrounding conflict?
3.) What narrative, stories, scripts do you have regarding conflict?
4.) How can you possibly improve or tweak the above 3 responses to make you even more effective at conflict in your own life?
