Dr. Duane Davis, Educator & Executive Director of K12 Education Initiatives and My Very Own Library at the University of Chicago, recalls interviewing for a business internship though the Inroads Program.
As a fifteen year old, young Duane Davis interviews for a business internship though the Inroads Program. It is from that experience that he determines he will become an English major in college.
Duane recalls wearing a clean shirt and pants and an earring to the first interview after filling out the Inroads application and including both "business" and "English" as he current fields of interest. At the conclusion of Duane's successful first interview the interviewers offer him three critiques: 1) wear a suit to the next interview, 2) remove "English" as one of his interests on his application, and only list "business." 3) lose the earring..
In subsequent interviews, young Duane "loses" the earring, but can't get the suit and he won't let go of his interest in English.
Ultimately, the process helps young Duane choose a life path that leads him to encouraging young people to be open to the wonder of possibilities and to be comfortable not necessarily knowing what they want to do with their lives.
