71. Prof. Brian Arkins: James Joyce & Aedín Moloney
Episode 71 continues with the celebrations of Bloomsweek with another upcycling of an episode recorded in 2023 for The Galway Podcast - this time with Professor Brian Arkins. Brian is a Professor Emeritus of Classics at the University of Galway. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and at University College Dublin, where he obtained an M.A. in Classics and a Ph.D in Latin. He is the author of 14 books and counting.
Just be mindful that any mentions of Brian’s upcoming lecture of course would have taken place last year. So mind the old ineluctable modality of the audible.
Also you will hear references to Aedín Moloney’s spellbinding performance of ‘Yes! Reflections Of Molly Bloom’. You can hear that conversation with Aedín on episode 70. That is definitely worth checking out to get a great insight into the closing of Ulysses.
Conversation includes: Brian’s education and background; structure; W.B.Yeats; Joyce and Aristotle; Dubliners; A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man; the humour in Joyce’s writing; Aedín Moloney’s performance of ‘Yes! Reflections Of Molly Bloom’; what did Stephen Dedalus do after Blooms Day?; Molly being an earth mother; Shakespeare’s influence; Homer’s influence on Ulysses; Brian’s career and his languages; Nora Barnacle; Joyce and alcohol; Joyce and catholicism; Joyce abroad; Dublin as a character; Joyce and Galway; Joyce’s employment; Joyce and cinema; France vs Ireland; censorship; cubism; Joyce’s depictions in cinema; Gerard Manley Hopkins; Desmond Egan and other topics.
