The Zodiac Killer is an unidentified serial killer who operated in Northern California during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The killer is believed to have murdered at least five people, though the Zodiac claimed in letters to have killed 37. The confirmed victims were young couples, often attacked in remote locations, with the first known killings occurring in December 1968.
What made the Zodiac Killer particularly infamous was the series of cryptic letters and ciphers he sent to local newspapers, taunting law enforcement and the public. These letters often included threats, puzzling symbols, and the killer’s personal signature—a crosshair-like symbol. Some of the ciphers remain unsolved to this day, adding to the mystery.
Despite extensive investigations, including numerous suspects, the Zodiac Killer was never caught, and the case remains one of the most famous unsolved serial murder cases in history. The killer’s identity and motive continue to be the subject of speculation and investigation, making the Zodiac Killer a lasting figure in true crime lore.
