Episode 3072: MATH IS WONDERFUL by Fred Hardwicke, MD
Math Is Wonderful by Fred Hardwicke, MD
My life has found mathematics a subject with numerous areas open for exploration. The chapter titles are the areas covered - primes, Pythagoras, progressions, parabolas, polygons, and probabilities. There are so many discoveries hard to find elsewhere that it might indeed be called the "math road less traveled." In the book there is an abundance of numerical connections to history, astronomy, biology, chemistry, music, my life, and the Bible. The chapter on parabolas is absolutely amazing, with such concepts as the Seven Great Numbers, Highway 46, spiral staircases to infinity, the Triple Jump, Silver and Golden and Platinum Elevators, and binary stars - all in numbers. Mathematics is presented as a subject of great beauty and wonder.
Fred Hardwicke taught medicine, hematology, oncology, and a little bit of math for 21 years in Lubbock, Texas at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He re-ceived the Internal Medicine Teacher of the Year Award in 2004. He currently lives with his wife, Beth, in Childress, Texas.
