Botala Energy Ltd (ASX: BTE) director and chairman Wolf Martinick joins Jonathan Jackson in the Proactive studio to discuss a key environmental approval for the Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park in Botswana. The approval is for a 250-megawatt (MW) solar project, developed in partnership with AAAS Energy of the Netherlands. This is part of a broader strategy that includes the Serowe coal bed methane (CBM) gas project, BTE's primary focus.
The approval followed a comprehensive environmental and social review, enabling the company to progress its energy goals sustainably. This latest development builds on previous approvals for the Serowe gasfield and the construction of a gas pipeline to Leupane.
BTE plans to develop the energy hub in two stages. The first stage will involve the construction of 250MW of the 500MW solar project, while the second stage will include a 200MW gas-fired electricity plant, a natural gas production facility and a copper beneficiation plant, contributing to Botswana’s goal of increasing in-country value addition.
Applications for building permits related to a photovoltaic manufacturing plant and the solar farm have been submitted, with joint ventures planned with Solar Finland and AAAS Energy.
