- Megaphone has overtaken Triton Digitalâs Omny Studio as the #4 biggest podcast host, according to total episode share in August measured by Livewire. Spreaker continues to take more episode share at #2; Spotify for Podcasters is still #1, though has lost almost a quarter of its market share this year.
- Podtrac is now measuring over 14% of all new episodes, another record for the company, says Livewire. The second-largest, Chartable, slipped down to 6.7% last month. Chartableâs analytics was down for almost three weeks, but its analytics dashboard has now been restored.
- Both Spotify and Apple Podcasts saw increase in download share for Buzzsprout shows last month. (Pocket Casts has almost doubled year-on-year.) iOS has increased over Android: possibly a knock-on effect from the end of Google Podcasts.

- Almost ten years after Serial and Undisclosed, the case is still going through the courts. Freed in 2002, Adnan Syed is still a convicted murderer, according to a new court ruling. He remains a free man; but the case is going to a new judge to again work out whether the conviction can be cancelled.
The Tech Stuff
- New data, to be presented tomorrow at Podcast Day Asia in Kuala Lumpur, shows Spotifyâs dominance in Asia. The data, based on OP3 data from a week in August, shows that Spotify delivers more downloads than Apple Podcasts in many large Asian countries. Weâll have more from this data later in the week as we continue analysing it.
- It should be noted that âdownloadâ data will always give higher figures for Apple Podcasts, since Apple does auto-downloads and Spotify doesnât. Also, this doesnât measure YouTube.
- Podnews switched our main podcast RSS feed to include all 1,800 episodes last week. As you might expect, that had quite an impact on our download numbers. But itâs also highlighted a few apps that arenât behaving right (itâs easier to spot misbehaving apps when you release more than 1,500 episodes on one day!). Weâve a few requests for comments with different app developers, and will report back later.
- In the Podcasting 2.0 show this week, we learn that Libsyn is hiring someone whoâs role will be to take part in the Podcasting 2.0 community (among other things). We also learn that more than four thousand people are following podcasts using the âfediverseâ, like Mastodon etc. (Thereâs a link in our podcast pages for that).
- If youâre wanting âa C# helper to read the Hive blockchain and extract Podping messages from itâ then the HivePodpingAPI is a new repo for you. Youâre welcome. (The tool will help you keep shows up-to-date if youâre running a podcast directory for your app).
