Technology Minerals Plc scientific director Anwar Sattar takes Proactive's Stephen Gunion through the company's recent advancements in battery recycling, including a £50,000 grant awarded to recycling business Rrecyclus by the Clean Futures Accelerator Program. This funding, matched by the company, will enable Recyclus to develop an innovative process to recycle lithium thionyl chloride batteries, which are currently unrecycled in Europe.
Sattar explained that these batteries, used in various industrial applications such as gas meters and fire alarms, contain toxic chemicals that need to be properly treated. The new recycling process will neutralise these chemicals and extract valuable lithium for reuse. Sattar also highlighted the company’s achievements at its Wolverhampton plant, where it set a new record by processing 7.2 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries in a single day. The company aims to scale up and handle larger batteries, further boosting its recycling capabilities.
This development showcases Technology Minerals' ongoing commitment to sustainable solutions in the battery recycling industry.
