Expansion Big 12's DOOMSDAY Schedule in Week Three: Colorado Loses, Texas Tech, West Virginia Fall?
years. One key issue is the inconsistency among its teams. Historically strong programs like Texas and Oklahoma are leaving for the SEC, and while the conference has expanded by adding teams like BYU, Cincinnati, and UCF, these programs will need time to adjust to Big 12 competition. The gap in talent and depth between the top and bottom teams could widen, leading to unbalanced matchups and underwhelming performances in non-conference and postseason games.
Another potential concern is recruiting. The Big 12 has traditionally been overshadowed by the SEC and Big Ten in terms of attracting top high school talent. With Texas and Oklahoma's departure, the conference loses two of its biggest recruiting draws. Schools like Kansas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia may struggle to pull in elite talent, especially in the face of growing competition from other conferences. If recruiting lags, it could lead to a decline in the overall level of play.
Additionally, the expanded footprint of the Big 12, which now stretches from Utah to Florida, could pose logistical challenges. The travel demands placed on players and coaches might lead to fatigue, impacting performance on the field. Moreover, the lack of traditional rivalries could affect the overall excitement and fan engagement, diminishing the intensity of conference play.
If these challenges are not addressed, the Big 12’s competitiveness in football could falter, leaving the conference in a weaker position.
