This week on #TubtaNabadda, ahead of the International Day of Democracy, we discuss Somalia's journey towards democracy and the significant strides the nation has made over the years. Despite facing formidable challenges, Somalia has successfully conducted elections resulting in peaceful transitions of power. Like citizens of other nations, the people of Somalia aspire to engage in a democratic process that empowers them to choose their leaders.
In the first segment of this episode, we hear from Deryck Fritz, Chief of the Integrated Electoral Support Group at UNSOM. He discusses the challenges facing Somalia's democratization efforts and highlights the UN's role in supporting the country in establishing credible democratic institutions. He also emphasizes the government's commitment to conducting ‘one person, one vote’ elections.
In the second segment, we hear from Mohamed Mohamud, Inclusive Politics Coordinator at the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation of the Federal Republic of Somalia. He discusses the evolution of Somalia's democratic landscape, emphasizing the significance of inclusive governance. Additionally, he outlines the role of the Ministry of Interior in facilitating direct elections in collaboration with Federal Member States and with the support of international partners.
The program is presented by Abdiaziz Dirie and Faiza Abdi Warsame.
