So, a bit about Dr. Couri’s story—she grew up Catholic but wasn’t really into it. She even admits she hated “all that Catholic stuff” for a long time. In college, she drifted into agnosticism after meeting her atheist boyfriend and getting caught up in big ideas like politics, justice, and feminism. She was more focused on those things and didn’t really think about God all that much.
Key Moment: The big turning point came when she was studying psychology and came across Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning (such a game-changer for her!). She was fascinated by the idea that life has objective truth—not just the "everything’s subjective" stuff she’d been hearing for so long. That realization was the first step in her faith journey back to the Church, and it felt like the missing piece of the puzzle for her.
Fast forward to today, and she’s using her background in theology and psychology to speak out about some of the biggest issues facing society—like the confusion around gender. Drew calls it a "diabolic disorientation," which really hit home. They both talked about how the world seems to have lost its sense of reason, and Dr. Couri agrees, especially when it comes to gender dysphoria.
She broke it down: the shift in medical terms from gender identity disorder to gender dysphoria shows how society has moved away from seeing these struggles as disorders, and now it’s all about "affirming" the confusion. Instead of helping people, especially kids, deal with underlying issues, we’re just going along with whatever they say. 😬 It’s not real compassion.
Dr. Couri also shared how she teaches her students to meet people where they are, but with real love. She talked about the Catholic understanding of the person as body and soul, made in God’s image, and how that’s the key to true healing.
Final Thoughts: It was an eye-opening convo about both her personal search for meaning and how we, as a society, have gone off track on important issues like gender. Dr. Couri’s journey is super relatable—whether you’re questioning your faith or just trying to figure out what’s true in a world full of confusion.
