We are approaching the threshold of a golden age in Artificial Intelligence research — perhaps the most thrilling technological revolution since the one that first ushered in the Internet era.You may have noticed the uptick in new stories mentioning self-driving cars, AlphaGo and robots. Maybe you felt a twinge of concern at Stephen Hawking’s warning that AI “could spell the end of the human race”. Perhaps you have encountered some of the opaque terms of art — “machine learning”, “deep learning”, “neural networks”, “big data” — that AI researchers use amongst themselves. All of this can seem distant and abstract — but already, AI techniques are changing the fabric of daily life in the form of customized recommendations, smarter web search results, voice and image recognition, and personal assistants like Siri, Google Now, and Cortana, which can understand natural language. If these developments seem to be coming faster and harder than ever before, that is no coincidence. The marriage of academia and industry is accelerating the development of AI. Almost every major company in the internet and computer industry is making AI a core part of its strategy. The intensified interest in the field is being felt in universities and institutes as much as in industry, where many leading computer scientists are leading their own research groups. We are excited to kick off our culture salon events for 2017 with our distinguished speaker, Yann LeCun, Director of AI Research at Facebook and Silver Professor of Computer Science, Neural Science, and Electrical and Computer Engineering at New York University. As a leading figure in the field of AI, he is well known for his work on optical character recognition and computer vision using convolutional neural networks, a machine learning technique that he pioneered. Yann’s research focuses on machine learning, computer vision, mobile robotics and computational neuroscience.
The event will include a talk, an interview and a Q&A session. Yann will discuss current developments in AI and his perspective on the future of the field. (For a general overview of what AI is, you may find this blog entry by Yann helpful.) You are welcome to list your questions in the registration form. We'd like to thank Ledell Wu from Facebook AI Research for inviting Yann.

Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Tesla, Nvidia, IBM,
