On this very complex episode of Tonguewaggers, we will be exploring gender-neutral, non-binary language, pronouns, and transgenderism. We are going to answer some questions like:
Is it wrong to use gender-neutral, or gender-inclusive langauge?
Is the singular "they" grammatically incorrect?
What causes shifts in language use?
Why do Romantic languages, like Spanish and French, struggle to be gender-neutral?
And finally, we will spend most of our time addressing which pronouns should we use for co-workers, friends, and strangers when they identify as a the opposite gender (or maybe not at all). For instance, should we call Jim at work "Jill" if that is what he requests? Should we use the pronoun "her" or "she" when speaking concerning him?
Pronouns are important to language efficiency. Identity in language is also important. Language change is inevitable, but often idealistically and poitically motivated. As Christians, what are we to do in times like this? Tune in and listen to the discussion.
