Terence Malick made his mark with his debut film Badlands. It has the appearance of a Bonnie and Clyde-esque story where two young lovers go on the run while leaving violence in their wake. However, Malick chooses not to focus on the violence, but on the quiet characterization of these young souls and as they wander through America establishing their own sense of self-reliance and responsibility.
