In 1998, two films were nominated for Best Picture about soldiers in World War II. One of them was Saving Private Ryan which remains one of the most beloved and horrifying stories about the battlefield. The other was The Thin Red Line, a forgotten Terrence Malick film that traded intensity for grace. Breaking from his previous format, this film features voice-over from a series of men--most of which are recognizable actors--as they confront their own fear as they try to take a hill.
