Decurro wants to keep Pivel alive to try and use him against Morran. When Valos opens the door a weird portal opens across the hall shooting a foul necrotic arrow, killing Pivel. Brannick is justifiably upset when he finds out but they are able to convince him that they didn’t kill him.
