WHERE JEFF WAS... It wasn’t until his 10th blog attempt that he finally found an audience.
The missing ingredient in the other 9 blogs was himself.
For the 10th blog, he decided he was not going to quit.
He committed to write every day for 2 years without fail and if he couldn’t get 250 readers by the end of 2 years, he would give himself permission to quit.
He also started meeting with people he wanted to be.
He later codified it into what he called “The Case Study Strategy”.
He built a network of people that were like him, that he admired or applied his case study strategy to.
He released an ebook along with the blog.
He asked his network of influencers to recommend and share it all at the same time.
From that came 1000 email subscribers.
By the end of the year, he had over 10,000 readers. He currently has over 100,000 readers.
WHAT JEFF LEARNED... He realized then: “this is what is on the other side of commitment feels like”. Good things can come if you commit to longer than a moment.
He wrote what’s true for him, but also what is true for someone else. He was both true to himself and relatable to others. A great mixture.
“The Writer’s Manifesto", his free ebook, resonated with people in that way.
He learned, “You first gotta do good work.” You have create good content - content that’s both true for you but also can resonate with others.
He also learned that it helps to have the right social network. It helps good work succeed more quickly.
Something that helped him connect with influencers well was a boss he had that taught him how to speak to busy people.
He encouraged him to come with questions. He encouraged him to take good notes. And, finally, he taught him the importance of follow-up. Emailing your takeaways later after the conversation is vital for connection.
The secret to influence is you keep showing up in a person’s life.
The first influencer experience having lunch with Michael Hyatt gave him confidence to speak to more influencers. He used this same formula each time until he even made a game out of it. It became fun for him.
He found it interesting that even when he meets his readers for lunch, he will tell them that 80% of the people never follow-up, and even when he tells them this, 80% of those people he meets for lunch don’t follow-up either! WOW!
Courage is essentially DOING THINGS WHILE you’re afraid.
ADVICE FOR LISTENERS... Be the 20% that follow-up. Pick one thing that you will find useful for you from one of the people that influence you. Follow it, do it and tell them about it. Then do the next thing and tell them about it. Stay in touch.
