Geektown Radio 188: Mary Poppins Returns VFX Supervisor Matt Johnson, Film News, UK TV News & Air Dates!
This week on the Geektown Radio podcast we have all the usual reviews, film news, UK TV premiere date info, and US TV news, plus an exclusive interview with Matt Johnson, the Visual FX Supervisor on the highly acclaimed 'Mary Poppins Returns'.
Directed by Rob Marshall, 'Mary Poppins Returns' is a followup to the classic 1964 movie about everyone's favourite nanny. Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.
VFX Supervisor Matt Johnson was given the somewhat daunting task of recreating the magic of the first film but for a modern audience. We discuss how he reacted to getting the job, and his approach to the project. We also talk about creating those amazing underwater scenes, dealing with the unhelpful British weather, and, of course, dancing penguins! Matt's previous work includes films such as 'X-Men: First Class', 'World War Z', and 'Into the Woods'.
