At Hughes Aircraft, Clifford is explaining that Jenny’s been kidnapped and he needs to use the Cirrus X-3 one more time.
“Those guys are playing for keeps!” says Wooly.
“I can handle Valentine!” replies Cliff.
“The Valentine gang is only hired muscle,” says Hughes. “They’re working for a Nazi agent — someone we think is highly placed in Hollywood society. Someone our ‘intrepid G-Men’ have been unable to identify.”
“It’s Neville Sinclair,” whispers Cliff to himself.
“What?” says Fitch.
“It’s Neville Sinclair!” repeats Cliff, louder.
“Come on!” says Wooly.
“Yeah sure!” says Cliff, “It makes perfect sense! That’s why he was bossing Eddie’s men around at the South Seas Club. That’s why he has Jenny!”
“Nice try, kid!” laughs Wooly. “We’re taking him downtown and we’re locking him up.”
“We’ll take it from here, Mister Hughes,” says Fitch. Cliff spots a large model of what would later become the Spruce Goose, handing from the ceiling above the factory floor.
“Let’s go, kid!” says Fitch. Cliff suddenly shoves Wooly out of the way and punches Fitch in the face again. Cliff pushes through the double doors to the balcony above the factory floor and leaps toward the Spruce Goose model. He grabs the undercarriage and flings himself off the balcony.
The rest of the people in Hughes’s office spill onto the balcony. Fitch and Wooly pull out their pistols but Hughes waves them off. “No guns!” shouts Hughes.
Cliff sails off the end of the balcony and through the open hangar doors. Dropping onto the pavement, he runs off into the night, while the Spruce Goose model continues to fly.
Hughes watches the flight, amazed. “The son of a bitch will fly!” he says.
The plane dissolves into the image of a statue of Copernicus.
