Why You Don't Have to Lose Weight for your Wedding with Louise McSharry
This week on The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're delivering a message to every engaged person on the planet - you look great, so, in the words of Billy Joel, don't go changing! Unfortunately, in the lead up to your wedding day there's extra pressure to conform to societal beauty standards - you'll likely hear that you need to lose weight, get your teeth straightened, get your nose fixed and so on, in advance of the big day. Billy Joel lyrics aside, we would never tell anyone that they should or shouldn't alter their appearance, but we do want to extinguish the myth that you need to look a certain way to get married. That's why we recruited the help of Louise McSharry, 2FM broadcaster, beauty columnist, and author of the book, Fat Chance, to help us put this episode together. Louise wrote an incredible piece for online magazine The Pool about her decision not to lose weight for her wedding, and we thought this was the perfect way to kickstart a crucial conversation about body image and wedding planning.
Episode Breakdown: Episode 11 - Why You Don't Have to Lose Weight for your Wedding with Louise McSharry
Wedding tip: This week, we're spreading the good word about open mic-style wedding speeches. Celina actually MCed the speeches at Claire's wedding, so needless to say, we're huge fans of this format!
Main topic: With our esteemed guest, Louise McSharry, we discuss why it's so difficult to maintain a healthy body image during wedding planning, and what you can do to safeguard yourself from diet and cosmetic surgery culture, and ultimately, walk up the aisle feeling happy with how you look.
Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I was wondering if you could speak on having an obligatory family member in your bridal party that you don’t have a lot in common with or agree on things with? How do you handle having them involved in all of the bridal party tasks? I have a sister and we are complete opposites but I thought having her as my Maid of Honour would be an opportunity to bring us closer. We’re far apart in age and are in complete different stages in life. I gave her the title but I don’t know for my sanity/happiness how much I want her involved in decisions.”
Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: Claire's recommendation this week involves scheduling a Skype date with a friend who lives abroad.
