The Resistance I Incur Strengthens Me

I saw a quote a while back that I wrote on a piece of paper because it moved me, and I’m pretty sure I’ve used it in a previous podcast. I had written in my notes that it came from the sacred spiritual text of the Bhagavad Gita. I was looking to find the exact translation to make sure I had the quote right, but I could only find parts of it, but it really doesn’t matter the exact definition as these words can be found in all the sacred texts that have ever been written. And the quote I wrote down said:

“You should do your work with all your heart with no thoughts of reward and then you will achieve external happiness.”

I know in my life I lived it by making sure people knew what I was doing. I had to make sure they knew I was lending that hand or by making sure I had the right answer to give to them to help them out in their predicament. And there’s nothing wrong with wanting, or letting, people know that you are doing good things for them. Where the problem came in for me was that—I HAD to have them know. My worth was wrapped up in others acknowledging and accepting me. I had to be seen as the good guy, so maybe I could feel like the good guy.

I wasn’t inauthentic in wanting to help others, but my helping hand had an underlying subconscious message—and the messages was that I believed happiness had to be given to me. I believed that to be worthy I had to be seen by others....
