The Stoic Habit ep 13 ; Enchiridion 118 ; Honest Progress
It’s not uncommon at all for people to lie a bit about themselves in order for them to appear better on the surface than they really are. They might lie about being happy with their job and about how their life is going.
Over time, these little lies can seep into people’s own thoughts, and they’ll start to believe their own lies. This is a dangerous situation to be in. Once you start to believe some of the little lies that you tell people to spice up your life, you start letting little problems accumulate subconsciously.
Enchiridion 13 states If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid with regard to external things. Don't wish to be thought to know anything; and even if you appear to be somebody important to others, distrust yourself. For, it is difficult to both keep your faculty of choice in a state conformable to nature, and at the same time acquire external things. But while you are careful about the one, you must of necessity neglect the other.
