Assuming that evolution follows a coalescent model within individual species, we examine the distribution of gene tree topologies conditional on species trees and the computation of this distribution. A particular focus of this talk will be on the properties of "anomalous gene trees," gene tree topologies that are more likely to evolve than the topology that matches the species tree. Some new results will be shown that illustrate the increase in complexity of anomalous gene trees with five or more taxa, and the results will be discussed in terms of their implications for phylogenetic inference from multigene data.
