Steelers Spit on the Football Gods in Loss to 49rs
Mason Rudolph was not as steady as he looked in the first game. Inaccurate and poor timing defined this game, but the play of the offensive line frightens us. This was supposed to be the most solid component of this team, yet the holes weren’t there. The unencumbered time for Rudolph wasn’t there.
The most glorious play of the game - JuJu Smith-Schuster’s 76 yard TD grab and run composed almost his entire game yield of 81 yards. Diontae Johnson may have foreshadowed a positive future, but three receptions and a wide-open TD does not turn a game around. Where was James Washington? What happened to Vance McDonald?!! These are certainly dark days for the once vaunted Pittsburgh Steeler ariel attack.
The ground fared not better behind James Conner’s 13 carries for 43 yards. Worse, he seems to now be defined as having at least one annual critical fumble. When the football gods shone their light on the Steelers when the 49rs, on a drive destined to terminate in the Pittsburgh end zone fumbled on the 11 yard line, only to have TJ Watt recover the ball - James Conner fumbled it away three plays later, terminated our chances at running out the clock.
Turning to the defense which permitted 20 plays that resulted in over 10 yards each, we saw almost equal futility. Although they capitalized on five 49rs foibles, the defense was not otherwise able to contain this offense. TJ Watt was a star. Minka Fitzpatrick is the real deal. Bud DuPree, once again, could not turn his assignment against a rookie to his advantage.
Good news again this week for Chris Boswell, who flies under the radar screen of mediocrity that the Steelers have deployed. He hit field goals of 46 and 26 yards in addition to two extra points.
Finally - how much longer does Keith Butler have? Chunk play after chunk play seems to lead one’s attention to the defensive scheme. Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?!
Things are Miami Dolphin-desperate, but our hands are sweaty. What can we expect when we visit the Cincinnati Bengals next week?
