The message was delivered on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Apologies can restore dignity and self-respect, repair harm, assure both parties that they have shared values, create renewed safety and new, shared meaning in relationships. Empathy, guilt and shame—our conscience—propels us forward; while fear of feeling vulnerable, of never being forgiven, of losing the relationship, losing respect, or losing our self-image or even our “self” holds us back. In our community, where our covenant—the promise which binds us together rather than a creed,—the art of apology is an essential tie and tool. Join me Sunday to explore the power of apology to restore right relationships in covenanted communities.
