We're joined by Rima Abushakra and Dima Abulhusn for Episode 78 of The Beirut Banyan, and we discuss Dar Bistro & Books - a cafe and bookstore in Hamra they opened in 2011 and continue to manage.
Rima and Dima share their reflections on the uprising now entering its 40th day, and the challenges of running a small business during recent economic decline. Our conversation includes Hamra's previous cafe culture that lasted well into the civil war, a determination to take part in that sense of community and expression and the power of storytelling.
In addition to running Dar Bistro & Books, Rima Abushakra worked as a journalist for AFP and a reporter for The Wall Street Journal until 2014. Dima Abulhusn continues to work as an architectural designer.
