Australian Fitness Podcast Episode #18 - Lee McDermott – Olympian, Elite Gymnast and Performance Enhancement Specialist.
Lee McDermott is a clever and talented guy. Talented because as an elite gymnast he went to the 1996 Olympics, won 2 Gold and 1 Bronze Medal at the Commonwealth Games and was British National Champion in 1994 and 1996. He also competed in 5 World Championships and 4 European Championships.
And he’s clever because he has taken all of those years as an elite athlete to now coach at the elite level and provide his expertise as a movement specialist to other sports that can benefit and learn from the sport of gymnastics to enhance their own movement competency.
This has taken him all over the world, including 10 years as Head Coach in the Cirque du Soleil. More recently he has applied his craft with Surfing Australian, the Broncos in the NRL and the Gold Coast Suns in the AFL.
It makes sense to me that you can enhance performance in other sports by enhancing overall movement competency and skill, and when you think of insanely difficult movements, completed with precision, strength, skill, co-ordination and courage, you think of gymnastics, well, I do anyway.
So our conversation was around his skills, experience and knowledge in that area, and it was another interesting chat with a person who has reached elite levels as a competitor and now as a coach.
Enjoy.
