As a precursor to Women in Horror Month (February), my wife was kind enough to guest host an episode of the show. In this episode, we discuss Mimic, the sophomore effort of director, Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim), starring Mira Sorvina (guys, did you know the lady from Romy and Michele's High School Reunion won a friggin' Academy Award?).
The film features an ensemble cast including a pre-Thanos Josh Brolin, a pre-The Walking Dead Norman Reedus, and Doug Jones (Hellboy, The Shape of Water, Hocus Pocus). Charles S. Dutton (Alien 3, Legion, Gothika) is great as ever in this film, as Leonard. Giancarlo Giannini (Hannibal, Darkness, Dracula) plays Manny, the grandfather of Chuy.
Until researching the film, Jake had no idea that it was based on a short-story, so guess what! He reviews that too! The writer of the screenplay, Matthew Robbins, went on to write Crimson Peak. That being said, he already had some serious writing credits having done Dragonslayer and *batteries not included.
The film eventually had two sequels: Mimic 2 and Mimic 3: Sentinel. Lucky for you, we don't go into those installments-- for now! Let us know if you want us to review those films or any others in the future by reaching out to us at slasherspod@gmail.com.
