On the 20th June 1931, Hubert Chevis was enjoying an evening with his wife Frances at his home in Camberley, Surrey. The newly married couple had hosted a cocktail party and when their friends left sat down for their dinner. The cook had prepared a Manchurian partridge and Frances carved it putting some on her husband's plate and some on hers. Hubert ate some of the meat and complained that it tasted bad. Frances agreed and they ordered it to be taken away. Not long after Hubert began convulsing and would later die in hospital. An investigation began into who poisoned Hubert and why leading to some unexpected findings.
