– Show Notes – Immortan Joe (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Team Diabolical loves a grand entrance, particularly when we’re speaking big bads in cinema. Our first glimpse of Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road presents a text book villain introduction; we’re immediately shown the level of respect and intrigue this character has by an ornate, almost ceremonial, wardrobe reveal. In an earlier session (linked conveniently below), we spoke on Ronin’s entrance in Guardians of the Galaxy and how that is of similar vain with regards to a ritualistic dusting of powder and intrigue. George Miller: The Road to Fury

Often times, the story behind the story is just as captivating; such is the case with Australian director, George Miller. While the last movie in his Mad Max franchise dropped in the mid 80’s, his road to Fury was nothing if not a definitive vision that took over 15yrs to realize. Talent sidetracked, Studios balking at filming on location rather than green screen- all issues that  were ultimately quelled by Miller’s unwavering determination.  After the overwhelming critical/box office returns, it serves as a reminder to always hold onto a vision regardless of how many see it differently. We raise a glass to George Miller.

This Week’s Dope Chuck’s Dope

Disneyland 60th/Hatbox Ghost – It’s been a magical 60 years to say the least, and while I’ve only been around for just over half of those, Disneyland never ceases to captivate my imagination. I’ve created countless memories there and I absolutely love the visual and physical immersion many of the park’s attractions present you with. The Haunted Mansion is the epitome of Walt’s physical storytelling and I defy you to walk it’s hallowed halls without feeling as though you’ve been transported to some ethereal plane of existence. For the 60th anniversary, Disney unearthed the fabled Hatbox Ghost; if you’re a fan of the Mansion, you no doubt understand the mystery and myth that has long plagued this ghostly fellow. Updated effects and all, the Hatbox Ghost’s triumphant return is what ultimately set my mind ablaze this week. I recommend a visit soon.

Batman: The Animated Series – Entire podcasts are dedicated to it. It’s instantly recognized as one of, if not the best animated shows of all time. The first time I watched it decades ago, I didn’t realize how it would resonate; seeing how well the characters are written and how vulnerable Batman feels at times. The re-watch had me captivated all over again and let’s be honest, we can all hear the theme music right now. For sure season 1&2 definitely had my mind ablaze the last month or so.
