– Show Notes – Henri Ducard – Batman Begins

Batman Begins was an important film for Batman fans as we needed something to expunge the bad taste Batman and Robin left in our collective mouths. Luckily, Chris Nolan delivered with Batman Begins and the Dark Knight was in vogue once again. Henri Ducard (played by Liam Neeson ) represents one of Team Diabolical’s favorite dark mentors- mainly because we didn’t see the evil turn coming. Ra’s al Ghul has always been an intriguing counterpoint to Batman and Liam Neeson certainly captured the bulk of that dynamic on screen. We enjoyed the film, but we loved Neeson’s Henri Ducard. Mr. Miyagi – The Karate Kid

When you’re talking mentors, the conversation begins and ends with Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid film franchise. Played absolutely brilliantly by Pat Morita, Mr. Miyagi represents everything you could ask for in a mentor- knowledge, courage, patience, humor and of course friendship. It’s no secret, Miyagi inspired Team Diabolical and we believe his teachings still hold up in the present day. Who can forget his epic “wax on, wax off” lesson as well as the meaning behind his Bonsai tree(s). Mr. Miyagi is one of those rare characters that will last the test of time and truly remain immortal. Click the links below to learn more on our favorite cinematic mentor.

Bright Lights, Big City (1984)

Published in 1984, Jay McInerney dropped a novel that both encapsulated the New York yuppie scene of the 80’s and delighted Team Diabolical’s “choose your own adventure” mindset. We specifically enjoyed how the novel was written in the second person and allowed for the story’s main protagonist to go unnamed. If you ever cross paths with this novel, we definitely recommend you give it a once over.  You may just enjoy the bright lights.

This Week’s Dope Chuck’s Dope

The Battery – If you’re a fan of the zombie genre, you owe it to yourself to catch this flick. The only warning I’ll set forth is approach with tempered expectations around gore and violence. What first time director Jeremy Gardner gives is a wonderful character story that gives you an idea on what an actual zombie apocalypse might feel like. For me, the last bit of the movie filmed entirely in a car is reason enough to watch. It’s not every day I walk away with a fresh perspective on a zombie film- kudos to you Mr. Gardner. My dope this week.
