The Stingaree District is the present Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego, California. In 1888, when this sixth legal mystery novel, Stingaree, takes place, it’s a thriving “sin city,” where men outnumber women 5-1, and half of the city is consumptive.
Enter two daring women, attorney-detective Clara Shortridge Foltz and Dr. Charlotte Johnson Baker. Both, real historical characters, are working to find out who is responsible for the shooting death of itinerant Kabbalah Rabbi, and cult leader, Jerome Sonenschien, during the Hundred-Round Fight in Tijuana, sponsored by Clara’s client, Wyatt Earp. Wyatt is on trial for first-degree murder, and Clara must defend him, so she explores the dark recesses of the Stingaree. What this Wild West female version of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson discovers, however, is much more horrific than one would imagine, even within the pages of Arthur Conan Doyle.
Author James Musgrave will be selecting three readers to weave into suspects to include within his mystery’s plot. This worked out very well for his third mystery, in the Portia of the Pacific series, when he added five readers as patients inside the Stockton State Insane Asylum.
Also, new readers may enter this current contest to be suspects in Stingaree. Each “qualification” gets you one entry. Winners will also get autographed paperback copies of the final mystery.
